ANNUAL HEALTHCARE DIVERSITY AWARDS
In 2001, Association of Hispanic Healthcare Executives (AHHE) established the Annual Healthcare Diversity Awards which this year will celebrate the Anniversary of the Association of Hispanic Healthcare Executives and the Inaugural Reception of the National Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on Health. Our trademarked Healthcare Diversity Awards Reception, which will occur in April 2005, serves as our major fundraiser to support our capacity building and infrastructure.
NATIONAL HISPANIC HEALTH PROFESSIONALS LEADERSHIP LEGISLATIVE FORUM
In 2004, the Association of Hispanic Healthcare Executives convened the first national forum of presidents of the major Hispanic health and medical professional associations. The Forum was chaired by U.S. Congressmember Hilda Solis (CA), Chair of the Healthcare Task Force, for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and U.S. Congressmember Nydia Velazquez (NY). Using the latest Internet technology, the forum was webcast nationally by the Kaiser Family Foundation and can be viewed by going to: www.AHHE.org
HISPANIC HEALTHCARE MEDIA ROUNDTABLE
Convening healthcare media roundtables of representatives of the electronic and print media has been one of the vehicles WE USE to communicate issues of concerns impacting Latino consumers of health services.
WORKSHOPS AND CONFERENCES
AHHE has implemented a variety of career development workshops, including co-sponsoring the 4 th Annual Latino Health Conferences, as well as breakfast networking Forums.
DISTINGUISHED LECTURER SERIES
In 2004, the Association of Hispanic Healthcare Executives launched ITS Distinguished Lecturer Series sponsored by Prudential Financial and Roche Diagnostics. Keynote speakers included Congresswoman Hilda Solis (CA.), Richard Carmona, M.D., U.S. Surgeon General, and Dr. Cristina Beato, Acting Assistant Secretary, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
USHCC ANNUAL LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE
The Association of Hispanic Healthcare Executives participated in the 2004 14 th Annual Legislative Conference sponsored by the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C. As a Group Leader addressing healthcare issues, we coordinated legislative meetings with Members of Congress and the Senate. Discussions focused on diversity issues in the healthcare industry regarding under-representation in senior management and boards of trustees.
MEXICAN AMERICAN LEGAL DEFENSE AND EDUCATION FUND (MALDEF) AND THE PUERTO RICAN LEGAL DEFENSE AND EDUCATION FUND (PRLDEF)/POLICY DIVISION
We have collaborated with legal advocacy groups to address regional and national diversity issues in the health care industry with AHHE’s support, as one of 29 national organizations, lending our names to the Amicus Brief filed by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (www. www.maldef.org ) in the Supreme Court decision in Grutter v. Bollinger, anti-affirmative action and work with the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (www.prldef.org) in the groundbreaking report, Condition Critical, The Absence of Latinos Among Policymakers in New York City's Voluntary Hospitals, (December 2004), by Annette Fuentes. SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM (SEP) INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OF THE INSTITUTE FOR DIVERSITY IN HEALTH MANAGEMENT AND THE GREATER NEW YORK HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION
Participation in mentoring and leadership development of future healthcare leaders has been a critical focus of AHHE’s mission. Working with the Greater New York Hospital Association, we sponsor and support graduate and undergraduate students for a 10-week summer internship program.
